When you come to see us, we will of course ensure that your teeth are adequately cleaned. However, beyond that, we will take steps to ensure the health of your gum tissue, as well.
First, we will use a device called a probe that allows us to measure around your teeth. This will alert us to the presence of any pockets between the gum tissue and tooth: these pockets can collect food, plaque, and other detritus and become problem areas if left untreated long enough.
Next, we will engage in a process called scaling and planning. During this process, we will scrape your teeth below the gum line in order to remove accumulated plaque and tartar. This helps reduce the amount of bacteria that are hidden below your gums—where your toothbrush cannot easily reach.
Regular gum cleaning appointments will help ensure that your gum tissue is healthy and free of disease. This, in turn, keeps your smile healthy, and the rest of your body will thank you, as well.
Beyond the aesthetic problems of gum disease—extreme halitosis, loss of teeth, and so on—there are plenty of health reasons to have your gums regularly cleaned, too. Gum disease is a condition that can affect remote parts of your body. Most people don’t realize it, but gum disease can contribute to strokes, heart attacks, infections, and other problems throughout the body.
